Home Fires - S02 E03

Drama . War

As the Battle of Britain intensifies, the women must do all they can to keep spirits high. At a dance organised by the Czech soldiers, Joyce gives Sarah some unwelcome advice, and the stakes are raised for Pat when someone discovers her relationship with Marek. Frances learns there is much more to Peter's affair than she realised, whilst Alison is forced to choose between her loyalty to Frances and her secret work for the police. Steph is increasingly concerned by Stan's behaviour on the farm, worried it's having an unwelcome effect on Little Stan. Meanwhile, the Brindsleys receive some wonderful news.

Home Fires is noticeably cheesy in parts (feel free to enhance your fun by supplying arch commentary to the dialogue), but it’s also easily absorbing. Also, for those paying close attention, the series is a contextually and satisfyingly feminist take on war.

It’s the kind of lushly produced, complexly plotted series that wraps everything in a wet towel of sentiment.... If you stick with it, though, the sheer weight of the plot machinery and the performances will probably pull you in, beginning about midway through the third episode.

The series, created by Simon Block, weaves its way deftly through its engrossing plot entanglements.

If it’s all rather familiar (the material is adapted by Simon Block from a book by Julie Summers), it’s nevertheless beautifully played.
