The Great Paxford WI need to make a tough decision after president Joyce Cameron resigns and takes most of the members with her, Frances Barden and her supporters need to work together if they are to resurrect the Institute, and recruit new members from some unexpected places. Will Campbell finds out the shocking reason why he can’t rejoin the army whilst Miriam Brindsley is determined to stop her son from signing up. Claire Hillman find herself attracted to postman Spencer Wilson, but she soon finds out that the path of true love never runs smoothly.

    Home Fires is noticeably cheesy in parts (feel free to enhance your fun by supplying arch commentary to the dialogue), but it’s also easily absorbing. Also, for those paying close attention, the series is a contextually and satisfyingly feminist take on war.
